Help from organisations and the government

In addition to the Assistance system, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) can help victims of human trafficking. On this page you will find contact details for both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

How the state can help victims of trafficking

The Assistance system for victims of human trafficking is an authority whose responsibility is to make sure that trafficking victims’ rights are protected. On this www.humantrafficking.fi website you will find information about the Assistance system and the kind of help it can offer. 

  •  Who is it for? Potential victims of human trafficking and their (under-aged) children, who are in Finland. Also helps people who have become victims of human trafficking outside Finland. Offers assistance also to witnesses in human trafficking cases.
  • Which support services are available? Long-term safe housing, health care, social services, social assistance/reception allowance, acquiring support persons, interpreting and translating, help to legalise stay, statutory legal aid and advice, help and support during criminal process, legalisation of irregular stay in the country in certain cases for a maximum of 6 months, support for voluntary return. The assistance system works together with the police to make your life safe.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will help you in case of problems with health and safety at workplace. Your workplace must be safe and your working conditions must not cause risks to your health.  You can also contact the Occupational Safety and Health Administration if you have problems with the terms and conditions of your employment contract or with well-being at work.

The national police team specialized in human trafficking and labour exploitation crimes started its work at the beginning of 2021. You can send tips and report a human trafficking or labour exploitation crime at ihmiskauppa@poliisi.fi. Please, notice, that it may not be safe sending sensitive information in an unprotected / non-secure e-mail.

If you suspect human trafficking, pandering (pimping) or labour exploitation and want to tell the police about it anonymously (without telling  your name), you can do it on the police’s web service or by phoning the police’s tip line.

  •  Who is it for? Women and children from immigrant backgrounds who have experienced violence

Finnish Refugee Advice Centre

  • Who is it for? Asylum seekers, foreign nationals applying or waiting for a residence permit or those without a permit. Foreign nationals who have become victims of crime.
  • Which support services are available? Advice and legal aid during the stages of the asylum process, an in other legal matters concerning foreign nationals and victims of crime. Free general advice given by e-mail and telephone. Free legal advice for paperless persons, other persons who have problems with their right of residence and those who are at risk of ending up paperless.

International Organization for Migration (IOM), Finland country office

  • Who is it for? Victims of human trafficking and other migrants voluntarily returning to their home country or another country
  • Which support services are available? Advice and support in matters of returning and re-integration, practical preparation and arrangements with the office in the destination country for safe voluntary return.

Churches may also offer social services (such as housing in crisis, food), particularly to those victims of human trafficking who are not entitled to access the services offered by local and cen-tral government.
